Take a long tail river taxi across the Mekong to a Laotian village .. not an official border crossing.
Its at the junction of Laos, Myanmar & Thailand. Community created because of "Golden Triangle" fame.
30 minutes southeast of Mai Sai. ( paved 2 lane blacktop )
Hot roddin' on the huge Mekong River with little traffic.
Cross the Mekong & you are in Laos.
There is a Lao village 2 or 3 km south of the main boat dock.
This is not an official border crossing ( = no immigration or customs ).
It's Lao & authentic primitive but also is a regular stop for the Thai tourist water taxi jockeys, stop on the Lao side for a drink & view the river traffic.
Worthwhile destination if you're in the area.
The Lao 'boss lady', mama-san, is a trip.. she could be TV talk show jabberer!

Spring 2004, During the dry season the Mekong is now all but dry due to a series of Chinese hydroelectric / irrigation dams.
2003, The Mekong was closed to commercial traffic on several occasion due to 3' / 1m water dept.
If you venture to Chiang Mai, a trip to Mai Sai & the Golden Triangle is worthwhile.
'Klong canal buses' are just that, inexpensive commuter mass transport using Bangkok's canals

Easy to find Klong San Saep water bus stops.:
Ekkamia / Petchaburi: behind the green high rise w/ McDonalds, left side of the building. Between the green high rise & the bridge.
Soi 3, several blocks down the 6 lane section from Sukhumvit. ..at Suk & Soi 3 facing the 'Nana sky train station' it is too your left!
Chitlom: behind the Central Department Store .. from the sky train it's the opposite side from Silom Square & down Chitlom 2 blocks.
WTC: between the WTC ( facing WTC to your right ) & Petchaburi, cross the foot bridge, left to the Klong stairs.
The 'Main Klong Bus Route' ends at the Ratchada Bridge ( near the World Trade Center & Panthip Plaza ) & smaller Klong buses continue all the way to Wat Pho.
Take the sky train to Taksin station. The river taxi station is directly across from the sky train station.
There is a water taxi station near the Wat Pho / Palace tourist area.
The Chao Praya is generally extremely "choppy", lots of BIG traffic.
The larger 'Chao Praya water buses' are available for private hire, 700 BT ( negotiated ) for a private river tour.
Private hire 'river taxi' with multiple persons = 700 - 900 BT.
Chao Praya River Boat Company is recommended.
Another is close to Grand Palace, behind the Oriental Hotel on the road toward the Sheraton Hotel.
River City Complex, close by the Sheraton Hotel... on the pier near the rear of the River City Complex is a river boat tour biz..
From the Wat Pho River Station to Taksin River Station is an excellent river ride.
Highly Recommended: A/C luxury motor launch to Ayutthaya.
See the ancient site from the river instead of the street.
The river & canals were the Primary Transportation system for the ancient City.
Via boat on the river & canals is how the citizens of Ayutthaya saw the temples.
The temples were designed to be seen from the river!
